Since its incorporation in 1998, the Group has experienced a steady growth, starting with the launch in 2000 of "Express-AM2" satellite (80° E) when it became the owner of 4 transponders of 36 MHz each. These transponders were then sold to the Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) in 2005. In parallel, the Group leased from RSCC 1 Ku-band and 3 C-band transponders on Express AM-2 (80° E) satellite and Express AM-11 (96.5° E) satellite, which, in their turn, were leased on a long-term basis to the International Organization of Space Communications "Intersputnik". In 2005 the Group entered a long-term agreement with Lockheed Martin Intersputnik, Ltd. for the lease of all 8 Ku-band Northern Beam transponders (of 27 MHz each) on "LMI-1" satellite (75° E), in 2006 renamed to "ABS-1" when the satellite was bought by Asia Broadcast Satellite, Ltd.

TODAY, the Group operates, through its main subsidiaries — GT Satellite Systems S.A. (GTSS) and "GeoTelecommunications", LLC (GT) — 21 transponders totaling 584 MHz spread over 7 communications satellites covering all Europe and most of Asia, including its core markets of Russia and the CIS.
In addition to the Fixed Satellite Services, the Group started Media activities in 2006. At present it produces and distributes five own well-known thematic TV channels, and distributes additionally six third-party channels.

Based on unique coverage of "ABS-1" satellite and an early understanding of the Russian Pay-TV market requirements, the Group created the biggest Cable TV platform in Russia. Today, the platform comprises over 80 TV channels (60% of which are thematic) and represents about 55% of all Russian cable networks content. This was the base for the very successful start of "Raduga-TV" Direct-To-Home television platform launched in 2009, which provides its customers with over 80 TV channels, covers now almost all Russian territory and is the fastest growing DTH project in Russia in terms of the subscriber base.

The group provides Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) to national and international customers in the fields of:

  • transponder capacity lease,
  • delivery of TV and radio channels to cable TV networks,
  • satellite internet,
  • data transmission,
  • communication channels lease.
Since 2006, the Group has been also developing numerous added-value services for its TV clients, such as encryption, play-out services, etc. and has been providing telecom services and distribution of professional equipment for satellite communication stations and monitoring systems.

"ABS-1" (formerly known as "LMI-1"), a telecommunications satellite was launched by "Lockheed Martin Intersputnik" JV on the basis of "A2100AX" platform. The satellite was located into the geostationary orbit at 75° East on September 27, 1999 and has been commercially used since November 1999. The warranty period of the satellite is 15 years, with the technical availability forecast of 18 years.
Since 2005, all 8 Northern beam Ku-band transponders (27 MHz each) have been at the exclusive lease of GTSS for the satellite's lifetime.

By 2008, a modern digital multimedia platform providing digital package broadcasting of television and radio programs, regional broadcasting and broadband access to internet was established on the basis of the Northern beam of ABS-1 satellite.

14 November 2011 — GT Satellite Systems S.A. (GTSS) and Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) announced that they have signed a deal valued at over US$ 125 million for multiple transponders on a condosat and lease basis to augment its multiservice capacity on ABS-2. Subsequent to the multiple transponder lease agreement announced in 2009, GTSS has developed its platform services, including TV channels contribution and "Raduga TV" Russian and CIS DTH business, which led GTSS to make a strategic investment to purchase additional condosat transponders on ABS-2, scheduled to be launched in early 2013.

ABS-2 is currently under construction and will have 89 active C, Ku and Ka-band transponders across 10 different beams with a design life of 15 years. It will be located at ABS' prime orbital location of 75°E. ABS-2 is specifically designed for a wide range of services including DTH, Cable TV distribution, VSAT services, Data networks and Telecommunications services. ABS-2 will provide expansion capacity to existing ABS-1 customers.
